The first workshop of the year is scheduled for February 5th, 2011.  It will take place in my home and home studio in Oak Park, IL.  The workshop is open to beginners and those more advanced.  The instruction will be tailored to the attendees, their level of experience, and what they wish to learn.  A rough agenda is as follows:

WORKSHOP START:

  • Utilizing natural light indoors, and applying various modifiers
  • Combining small strobe(s) with natural light using both TTL and manual settings
  • Gels, and how they balance light temperature to create a “natural” looking strobed effect
  • ISO settings, and how to get clean looks at high ISO
  • Light metering techniques
  • Shooting with post-processing in mind.  Post processing shouldn’t “save” an image, it should enhance it.
  • Photographer resources: books, magazines, on-line, etc.
  • Gear: when you need to spend money, and when you can use what you have

LATE MORNING:

  • Using above techniques with our model, Jacqueline
  • Posing and placing the model in light to flatter them
  • Working through basic to advanced lighting setups and the advantage to each
  • How to get big results quickly with minimal gear.  This is for those who want to improve the quality of the typical snapshot.
  • Reading the light in-depth and understanding how it changes as you move, and your subject moves.

LUNCH (provided):

  • Open discussion about the morning and answering more questions
  • Eat quickly…review the afternoon agenda…and back to work

EARLY AFTERNOON:

  • Studio light setups on a backdrop
  • Discussion on various modifiers
  • Simple to more advanced lighting setups
  • Getting great results with one light

LATE AFTERNOON:

  • Using studio lights for an indoor, on-location shoot
  • Mixing studio lights and small strobes on-location
  • Ad-hoc studio setups on-location, and how to do them effectively
  • Creative lighting setups: backllighting, gels, etc.

WRAP-UP

  • Photoshop, Lightroom, and other post-processing techniques
  • Improving your workflow to limit time behind the computer
  • Open discussion and wrap-up

All of the above instruction will have time for individual shooting.  The class is limited to 6 or 7 students, and will be adjusted as needed.  The goal is to give both the beginner, and advanced shooter skills to take back with them.  Be it studio lighting, or taking photos of your kids; you will improve your photographs.  The workshop is focused on people, and taking better photographs of people.  It is not a “shoot-out”.  It’s a workshop where real instruction is given, and real-world skills are learned.

The workshop cost is $195.  To reserve your spot, please provide a $50 deposit using the PayPal button below.  Your balance will be due one week in advance.  A PayPal account is not required.
